Språk- och kommunikationsstöd i förskolan

Abstract

The purpose of this survey is to study how preschool educators indicate that they work with language and communication support in preschool. The survey also aims to find out how language and communication support appears in the physical environment at preschools. To enable this study, questionnaire surveys and observations have been used as a data collection method. The questionnaire survey involved 42 respondents, while two different preschools were visited during the observation survey.   The final results of this survey shows, that all the participating respondents have a positive attitude towards language and communication support, and also that there is something they regularly work with. The situations the respondents answered that they mainly work with language and communication support, are in routine situations during the day and when they gather for circle time. According to the results of the survey, the most widely used language and communication support was image support, and second most was signs as support. Most of the respondents use the support as a combination of a general effort for all children's language development and a support for children in need of special support in their language development.   The results of the observational study shows that language and communication support is something that appears in the physical environment at both preschools. Both preschools had visible image support, but the location of it was limited to only some of the rooms. One of the preschools had a wider range of image support and the same preschool also had visible mother language support and signs as support, which was not visible at the other preschool.   In summary, the survey shows that language and communication support are included in the work of educators and also in the physical environment of the preschools that participated in this survey
