Descriptions of branes in string theory

Abstract

This thesis deals with the descriptions of branes in the context of the AdS/CFT duality and string field theory. In the context of the AdS/CFT duality it is analyzed if seven-dimensional quantum field theories give rise to a dual description by string theory on an eight manifold. In calculating the graviton scattering on D6 branes it is shown that, independent of the rank of the B-field, no dual descriptions exist. For comparison scattering on Dp branes (with p smaller than 6) and NS5-branes with background B-field are analyzed. Within string field theory using the notion of super connections, an action functional is constructed for unstable branes, which reproduces the exact tensions of lower dimensional D-brane condensates. This formalism was applied as well for brane-antibrane configurations as for non-BPS branes. Furthermore, the tachyon potential for unstable branes on the three sphere are calculated exactly. Finally, with the tachyon potential at hand, the decay modes of branes on the curved manifold are analyzed
