Loss Processes in the Accretion Column Accelerator of Hercules X-1

Abstract

The energy loss processes at work in a recently proposed new mechanism for the acceleration of protons in the accretion columns of X-ray binaries are considered here in more detail. It is found that the spectrum is modified somewhat, but not drastically, and interesting fl-ray fluxes are obtained for the Her X-1 system. 1 Introduction In the last few years, interest has waned somewhat in X-ray binaries amongst the high-energy gamma-ray community. Nevertheless, there remain some striking unexplained observations of fl-ray emission above 100 GeV from this class of objects, Cyg X-3 and Her X-1 in particular. Recently, a new mechanism to explain the acceleration of protons to energies above 100 TeV in the accretion columns of X-ray binaries was proposed, using Her X-1 as a prototype [1].
