Abstract
Institutional and technological changes, mainly the HYV technology introduced in the 1960s, turned India into a progressive food grain producing country. Since the early-1990s, Indian agriculture has also faced competition from the global economy in the wake of globalisation. This has led to the emergence of a decelerating tendency in Indian agriculture especially in terms of growth of production of major crops and total agricultural production. In view of the above, diversification of agricultural activities is considered important for enhancing agricultural production and productivity in India.
