Mitigation of Harmonics and Reactive Power Using Control Strategy of Active Power Filters with Facts

Abstract

Abstract — In this article, the Active Power Filters are used as one of the custom power devices with FACTS devices to decrease the cost of power electronic devices and improve the efficiency of power converters and energy storage components of the system. The APF can minimize the harmonics; reduce the reactive power and unbalanced load current coming from the load side. In this paper, a detailed study of APF is made, the merits and demerits of each section are presented and control techniques are focused optimally, for harmonics and reactive power The system of Active Power Filter can be divided into two parts. One is the control unit and the other is power circuit as in Figure 1. The control unit comprises of signal generator, capacitor unit to control voltage unbalance and measurement of voltage and current. Whereas the power circuit consists of APF, energy storage unit, DC converter, harmonic filter and system protection unit
