Charged-Particle Multiplicities of Quark and Gluon Jets in

Abstract

Charged-particle multiplicity was studied in e + e 0 annihilation at p s=57.8 GeV using the TOPAZ detector at TRISTAN. The average multiplicity was hn ch i = 17:64 6 0:05(stat:) 6 0:41(syst:). It was found that the multiplicity depends on the thrust (T)ofanevent. From extrapolating this relation to T =2=3, the multiplicity for three-fold symmetric events was estimated to be hn ch i T=2=3 =23:50 +1:25 01:45 .From this, the multiplicity ratio between gluon- and quark-jet was estimated to be r g=q = 1:46 +0:09 00:13 without any possible bias from jet clustering. 1 Internet address:nakabaya@kekvax.kek.jp. 2 Present address: Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94309, USA. 3 Present address: Hitachi Techno-service Co.
