This paper is concerned with another central aspect of syntax, `ine#ability', which, at first sight, other non-OT approaches seem to better explain, and for which the OT approach to syntax has been claimed to somehow "miss the point" (e.g. Pesetsky 1997). Based on an analysis of data involving ambiguity, I hope to substantiate the argument put forward by Smolensky (1998) that ine#ability is not a problem for OT but rather it provides an argument for a unified approach to optimization in syntax and phonology. 2 The Problem of Ine#abilit
