ts on the recent SOHO mission (which orbits the Sun and therefore has an uninterrupted view) have been quite successful in following regions with a flare promise for more than a day. Future observations from a fleet of spacecraft, in Solar orbit and positioned at different angles from the Sun (the "Stereo" mission) will further eliminate the two week limit of visibility of any promising region, due to the rotation of the Sun itself, and further allow a three-dimensional view of the structures involved. In the following section the observational results to date on flare precursors will be reviewed. After that the observational signatures for the magnetic energy build-up, and changes in the magnetic field structure in preflare regions will be summarized. The article concludes with a description of the basic requirements for theoretical models of preflare energy build-up and the triggering of a flare.
