Divine Associations: Arion in Iconography

Abstract

An examination of the myth of the citharode Arion and the history of dolphin-rider imagery in ancient pottery and coinage. A clear overlap in the geographical locations present in both the myth and production regions for material culture, as well as the conception of the musician as a psycopomp indicate the strong possibility of ancient hero-cult focused on Arion.
