Sound in design: a new disciplinary sub-field? / Il suono nel design: un nuovo sottoambito disciplinare?

Abstract

The eclectic attitude of design is reinforced and fostered by the transdisciplinary nature of design-related thinking. For this reason, design can be considered as a constantly evolving discipline, capable of transforming and evolving new sub-areas, depending on the challenges proposed by the working context. Within this framework, the reflections of Canadian musician and theorist Raymond Murray Schafer on the idea of soundscape can be considered as the initial impulse that gave rise to one of the new challenges of design. For many years, only a select few designers paid attention to sound as part of design. The renewed focus on the theme highlights considerable scientific interest, concentrated on the possibilities of formulating, developing and communicating the sound identity of a more appropriate product. Affordance and usability can, in fact, be strengthened through this sensory channel that binds man and artifacts in a way that is as effective as it is intangible. In this case, design can be considered as the generator of a new design sphere: the experimentation on sound in design pursued out in Italy first, has shown how various disciplines ranging from design to engineering, acoustics, and psychoacoustics can contribute to the development of product sound, if guided by the design method. Starting from these assumptions, sound design could be considered as one of the possible new sub-disciplines of design capable of taking advantage of the transdisciplinary approach. A better knowledge of the processes that lead to the definition of sound design seems, therefore, an essential step, as is learning current approaches to this subject. The contribution will focus on the origin and development, significant case studies, and the theories and design methods on the basis of this new area of design. / L’attitudine eclettica del design è rafforzata e favorita dalla transdisciplinarità del pensiero progettuale. Per questa ragione, il design può essere considerato una disciplina in costante evoluzione, capace di trasformarsi sviluppare sottoambiti nuovi, in funzione delle sfide proposte dal contesto di lavoro. In questo quadro, le riflessioni del musicista e teorico canadese Raymond Murray Schafer sull’idea di soundscape possono essere considerate come l’impulso che ha dato il via a una delle nuove sfide del design. Per molti anni, solo pochi designer hanno prestato attenzione al suono nel progetto. La rinnovata attenzione per il tema mette in luce un interesse scientifico notevole, focalizzato sulle possibilità di formulare, sviluppare e comunicare l’identità sonora di un prodotto più opportuna. L’affordance e l’usabilità possono infatti essere rafforzate tramite questo canale sensoriale, che lega uomo e artefatti in modo tanto efficace quanto intangibile. Il design in questo caso può considerarsi generatore di un nuovo ambito di progetto: la sperimentazione sulla progettazione del suono nel design portata avanti in Italia ha dimostrato come svariate discipline che spaziano dal design, all’ingegneria, all’acustica, alla psicoacustica, possano contribuire allo sviluppo del suono di prodotto, se guidate dal metodo progettuale. A partire da questi assunti, il progetto del suono potrebbe essere considerato come uno dei possibili nuovi ambiti del progetto in grado di trarre vantaggio dall’approccio transdisciplinare. Conoscere meglio i processi e gli approcci attuali che portano alla definizione del progetto sonoro appare quindi un passaggio essenziale.
