Abstract

*Laurean Rugambwa (July 12, 1912 - December 8, 1997) was the first modern native-African Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1960 and served as Archbishop of Dar es Salaam from 1968 to 1992. In June 1963, following the death of Pope John XXIII, Cardinal Rugambwa became the first negro cardinal in the Catholic Church\u27s history to attend the Pontiff election.https://dh.howard.edu/pittcourier_religion/1048/thumbnail.jp
