Although printing from movable type began in the J~\. western countries about the middle of the fifteenth century, the amount of printed literature in any field remained small for some time thereafter. It was not until the beginnings of the sixteenth century that true subject bibliography can be said to have begun. According to Besterman 1 four medical bibliographies were published in the sixteenth century, but two more are listed by Thornton. 2 Each will be discussed here
