This important paper goes a long way towards answering a basic question in algebraic topology. Unstable homotopy theory is relatively uncontroversial; we study the homotopy theory of topological spaces that is determined by finite CW complexes. Stable homotopy theory is another story. There are many different ways to produce a model category of spectra and a resulting triangulated homotopy category of spectra. The question is: are all those ways equivalent? They are in practice, but must they be? There are two obvious approaches to this question. One could ask how unique the triangulated homotopy category of spectra is, or one could assume given the triangulated homotopy category
