Abstract

are drawn from the past that ought to bear on the future. Some opinions are delivered on the future course of research in fire danger rating, prescribed fire and the impacts of fire on the forest economy. The title of this presentation is based on the principle that the past is the key to the future. If not absolutely true all of the time, this principle works well enough that "to look backward as well as forward before leaping ahead " is always good advice in the world of research.
