Reducing the environmental impact is a challenge to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) all over Europe. The pressure on SMEs for products and processes with a lower environmental impact will increase from the market place as well as environmental legislation in the coming years. This challenges SMEs as more than 99 % of the enterprises in Europe are SMEs employing almost 70 % of the European workforce and producing close to 60 % of the overall turnover from manufacturing and services. This report estimates the environmental impact from SMEs in Europe building on data from Eurostat. Furthermore the report analyses the administrative burdens from EU environmental legislation and the business opportunities for the SMEs with concrete examples from SMEs in 13 European countries.
