Military operations other than war encompass a wide range of activities where the military instrument of national power is used for purposes other than the large-scale combat operations usually associated with war. These operations are often conducted outside the United States and they include military support to U.S. civil authorities. Military operations other than war involve the traditional military elements such as air, land, sea, space and special operations forces as well as other governmental agencies and nongovernmental organizations. a.
