奴隷制問題の消息 : <テクノロジーの系譜学>によせて(上)
Is the system of slavery just or unjust? This question sounds too "unfashionable" even to be taken seriously. In fact, some might say that the only possible answer is that asking such a question is in itself unjust. It is true that most of us regard the abolishment of slavery as one of the most brilliant achievements of our modern age. However, on the other hand, we can not deny that the total critique of modernity is a matter of great urgency. Above all, it is worthwhile to dare to treat the problem of slavery philosophically, because a great number of pre-modern philosophers, especially in classical antiquity, acknowledged the distinction between master and slave on theoretical grounds. In this essay, I propose, against the strong taboo of our society, to consider one question: "For the sake of which was slavery instituted?
