voiceFall, 1963Collected and transcribed by Don Callaway Irene Sargent West Fork, Ark. 17 Fall 1963 Reel 434, Item 2 WEDDING BELLS The wedding bells were ringing On a moon light winters night The church was decorated All within was gay and bright. A mother with her baby came And saw the lights aglow It made her think of the same bells chime For her three years ago. I'd like to be admitted Sir She told the sexton old Just on account of baby To protect him from the cold. This wedding is not for the poor But for the rich and grand And with the eager watchful crowd Outside she'd have to stand. She begged the sexton once again To let her pass in side For baby's sake you may step in The grey haired man replied. If any one has reason why This couple should not wed Speak now or hold your peace forever Just then the preacher said.Collected and transcribed Irene Sargent by Don Callaway West Fork, Ark. Fall 1963 18 Reel Item 2 Continued I must object the woman said In voice so meek and mild The bridegroom is my husband Sir And this our little child. What proof have you the preacher asked My infant she replied She raised her babe and knelt to pray The little one had died. The parents of the bride then took The outcast by the arm We'll care for you through life, said they You've saved our child from harm. The parents, bride, and outcast wife They quickly drove away The husband died by his own hand Before the break of day.
