Come back, come back to me, sweetheart, And love me as before,

By Tom Boyd

Abstract

voice; guitarsCollected by Merlin Mitchell Tom Boyd Transcribed by Mary C. Parler Patrick, Ark. November 23, 1950 Reel 81, Item 3 In the Shadow of the Pines We wandered mid the shadows of the pines, my love and I, As the wind was blowing freshly from the sea, When a sudden fitful darkness stoled across the summer sky, And a shadow came between my love and I. Some hasty words were spoken and almost undaware Hasty answers to unthinking anger led, While our heart sick, bitter longing and our weeping and out prayers Cannot make those false and cruel words unsaid. Chorus: Come back, come back to me, sweetheart, And love me as before, Come back, come back to me, sweetheart, And leave me nevermore; In life's dark pathway The sun no longer shines; Come, love, and meet me In the shadow of the pines You tuck the ring I gave you, nor cast a glance at me, You helt the jeweled trinket in your hand, You turned and threw hit rudely to the waters of the sea, Where the waves was splashing idly on the sand. You went your way unheeding, though tears I could not hide, You went your way and not a word was said, While my stubborn heart was breaking underneath its mask of pride And the pine trees sobbed in pity overhead. Chorus I wake from bitter dreaming but to call aloud your name, I sleep again to dream of you once more, My stubborn heart's relived it, and I'd give this world to know If you'd forgive me, dear, and love me as before. The future is all shadowed with the darkness of despair, And in the sky the sun no longer shines, I would give this whole world gladly onst again to meet you there Reunited in the shadow of the pines.
