Fourth Annual Older boys’ Conference, 1926

Abstract

A poster used as a promotion and publication poster to advertise the "Fourth Annual Older Boys' Conference" for "Springfield and Vicinity" which took place January 30, 1926 at the Trinity Methodist Church. The photographs depicted on the poster include portraits of [clockwise from upper right]: Dr. J. Gordon Gilkey (Pastor of the South Congregational Church, one of America's greatest preachers), Blake A. Hover (General Secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association, with an experience of twenty-five years in the leadership of youth), Walter Juckett (President of the conference, Outstanding leader of boys in High School and Church Work), Nate Parker (Captain of the great 1925 Dartmouth football team), Robert 'Bob' Elliott (Class of 1926 of captain of the Springfield College football team), and William 'Bill' Roper (Head coach of football, Princeton University, Maker of great teams and men). The photograph located at the top center of the poster is captioned, "Third Annual Older Boys's [sic] Conference, January, 1925". Robert Elliot was captain of both the Basketball and the Football team at the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College. He was, in his senior year, part of what was “undoubtedly the finest football classic on Pratt Field in many years” winning the game against the Mass. Aggies in the last play. Elliot “lead his team into the fray for last time and too much cannot be said about the manner in which the plucky leader covered himself with glory and brought to a close a remarkable football career”
