Abstract

To whom correspondence should be addressed granulocytes (neutrophils) in the human cervix during the intrapartum period, and that this invasion of neutrophils was associated with breakdown of collagen fibres. Using electron microscopy, active degranulation of these leukocytes was also observed. The presence and distribution of different subsets of leukocytes were not further investigated. The present study is the first to examine the distribution of leukocyte subtypes in the human cervical stroma using immunohistochemical methods. Monoclonal antibodies, recog-nizing specific surface antigens, were utilized to detect these cells at different stages of pregnancy.
