Abstract

SubmittedAugust4,2008 Wediscussthepossibilitythathigh-frequencyQPOsinneutron-starbinarysystemsmayresultfromforcedresonant oscillationsofmatterintheinnermostpartsoftheaccretiondisc,excitedbygravitationalperturbationscomingfrom asymmetriesoftheneutronstarorfromthecompanionstar.Wefindthatneutron-starasymmetriescould,inprinciple, beeffectiveforinducingbothradialandverticaloscillationsofrelevantamplitudewhilethebinarycompanionmight possiblyproducesignificantradialoscillationsbutnotverticalones.Misalignedneutron-starquadrupolemomentsofa sizeadvocatedelsewhereforexplaininglimitingneutronstarperiodscouldbelargeenoughalsoforthepresentpurpose.
