Observation of D0 Meson Decays to \u3c0+ \u3c0 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12 and K+ K 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12 Final States

Abstract

The first observation of the D0 \u2192 \u3c0+ \u3c0 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12 and D0 \u2192 K+ K 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12 decays is reported using a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by LHCb at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, and corresponding to 2 fb^ 121 of integrated luminosity. The corresponding branching fractions are measured using as normalization the decay D0 \u2192 K 12 \u3c0+ [\u3bc+ \u3bc 12]_{\u3c10/\u3c9}, where the two muons are consistent with coming from the decay of a \u3c10 or \u3c9 meson. The results are B(D0 \u2192 \u3c0+ \u3c0 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12) = (9.64 \ub1 0.48 \ub1 0.51 \ub1 0.97) 7 10^ 127 and B(D0 \u2192 K+ K 12 \u3bc+ \u3bc 12) = (1.54 \ub1 0.27 \ub1 0.09 \ub1 0.16) 7 10^ 127, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the normalization branching fraction. The dependence of the branching fraction on the dimuon mass is also investigated
