Litter type and the occurrence of dermatitis in broiler chickens bred under bts breeding conditions

Abstract

V raziskavo smo vključili tri vrste nastilja: hoblovino (H), peletirano slamo (PS) in rezano slamo (RS). The goal of this research was to find out, if the chickens are capable to choosing appropriate litter and how the certain litter effects on their health in different season, in this case, on the occurrence of foot dermatitis. 3 different types of litter were included in this research: wood shaving (H), straw pellets (PS) and cut straw (RS). The observed chickens were divided into 6 groups. We observed one group daily for 42 days where the, average size was about 11800 animals. The chickens were settled across the whole barn, which was divided into three sections. Every section had different litter and there were no barriers between sections. When the barn was depleted and prepared for a new group, the litter in all the sections was changed. In each section, there were 6 observation places in the size of one square meter. There was no statistical significant difference (P > 0.05) in achieved weight at the control weighing among different litters. Also, there were no statistical significant differences (P > 0.05) in the live weight between the groups of chickens, respectively. Concerning the choice of litter, there were some statistical significant differences (P ≤ 0.05). Wood shaving and straw pellets were more settled with chickens than cut straw. There was also statistically significant difference (P > 0.05) in the weekly observation of a group for feet injuries. There were less FPD on wood shaving and straw pellets than on cut straw. The highest number of injuries appeared in winter time. The highest absence of injuries was on wood shaving and straw pellets
