Economics (UNEP DTIE) organised this parallel session at CP7 in the framework of its Advertising and Communication Forum that started in 1999. The creation of this Forum was in line with governments ’ recommendation at the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) Rio+5 Earth Summit (1997) “to encourage business, the media, advertising and marketing sectors to help shape sustainable consumption patterns”. It aims to:- raise awareness of the companies and the advertising agencies on environmental and social issues- establish forum for dialogue and capacity building with other stakeholders: consumer organisations, industry and governments in both developed and developing countries- prepare input for The World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD, Johannesburg, 26 th August – 4 th September 2002) and its resulting follow up programmes. Since 1999, UNEP has spread its message in many advertising fora worldwide and has organised several international workshops on communication issues. It has notably developed privileged partnerships with the World Federation of Advertisers (WFA), the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA) and the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA) and has facilitated the preparation of the advertising industry contributio
