With growing competition, and customers and businesses using the Internet more and more, companies are being forced to integrate their systems in order to reduce costs and remain competitive. Organizations are investing in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications and call center technology to improve service to customers and are also seeking to integrate more closely with suppliers. It is not enough to implement these solutions in isolation. The integration must support real time business processes that span the entire supply chain. However, all of these organizations have existing legacy systems representing a significant investment critical to business operations and do not have the luxury of starting again with new systems. They must seek to integrate using whatever integration tools are available. With new e-business initiatives comes the requirement for software products that reduce the integration effort. Similarly, merges and acquisitions and the creation of new applications that provide aggregate views of data from different places in the enterprise also add to integration challenges. The market for application integration products and services, including middleware and corporate portals, will soar to a staggering $10.5 billion by 2006 according to the Gartner Group. Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and Web Services are two approaches that work to address integration issues. EAI is more mature and has been around longer. Web Services has however received tremendous focus over the last year. Which approach should a business adopt? Page 2 5/11/2004Integration using EAI or Web Services- which is a better choice
