We analyse a new IMF dataset on the geography of international portfolio investment. We find that trade linkages heavily influence investment patterns. In particular, Ireland overinvests in the United Kingdom, relative to the predictions of simple financial portfolio analysis. While there may be good reasons for such a deviations, undue reliance on familiarity to guide investment strategy is potentially costly
