Abstract

used to be one of millions and now you’re one in a million. Why? Because you speak English fluently and that makes you unique – and necessary. English is in demand worldwide. While we were taking it for granted here in Canada the rest of the world has been embracing and adopting it. It’s spoken as a native tongue in a few countries like Canada, the United States and Great Britain but it’s spoken as a foreign language in nearly all the rest. English is this planet’s lingua franca. Japanese tourists speak it to Mexican hotel clerks. German businessmen use it to communicate with Chinese government officials. English, for all its faults, is the language that unites the world – when it is spoken well. That’s where you come in. When English is mispronounced, misspoken and otherwise misused it confuses the world. Worldwide native-speakers are being hired as English teachers to help overcome this problem – and it is a problem! English is not an easy language to learn or use.
