Managers within such organisations must lead innovation in the creation of new products, services and processes in order to survive. However, innovation is the offspring of creative, entrepreneurial minds with the willingness to take risks and commit to sustained persistent efforts. Managers within government and non-profit organisations are frequently challenged in achieving such innovation by structural impediments and ‘sticky’ organisational cultures. This paper examines these challenges and identifies pathways to overcoming such barriers with a view to unlocking the potential within organisations.
