Sustainable development and the problems of measuring

By Art Kovačič

Abstract

Abstract—There are many questions regarding business-society relationship. We can bring more benefits to society through improvement of enterprise behaviour. Sustainable development is the concept that connects business performance and welfare of the citizens. Slovenian business sector is now more integrated in the European Internal Market; therefore, the richer European demand is more sustainable and green-oriented. The sustainable consumption has influenced the Slovenian companies to change. Sustainable development is not just an additional cost for companies but also the environmental and social responsibility in the more ecological European market. Business has viewed environmental protection measures too often as a burden, assuming anything that increases costs hurts competitiveness, and that high standards are a disadvantage in the global market place. For policymakers, it is really important to identify the main steps towards the sustainable development. Keywords—Economic development, benchmarking, development strategy, environmental economics
