Preparation of Membrane for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell

Abstract

Abstract — In the research work, a polystyrene resin was prepared from commercial grade polystyrene beads using two solvent acetone and methyl ethyl ketone to solubilize the polystyrene beads. Cation exchange capacities of the sulfonated polystyrene resin were determined by Static Method. A sulfonated polystyrene membrane was made from prepared resins. Sulfuric acid was used as a sulfonating agent. Sulfonation times were 15 min, 30 min and 60 min. The resin prepared for 30 mins sulfonation reaction time at 100±5 °C in acetone and 90±2 °C in methyl ethyl ketone gave the highest values of cation exchange capacities 2.95 meq/g and 3.215 meq/g respectively. Polystyrene sulfonated membranes were made from above 2 resins. Transport properties such as conductance and apparent diffusion coefficient were determined. Apparent diffusion coefficient of those were 2.8×10-7 cm 2 /sec and 3.9×10-7 cm 2 /sec respectively.
