Otago Centre for Bioengineering launched The University’s ability to contribute to healthcare innovations in New Zealand and overseas has been enhanced with the official launch of the Otago Centre for Bioengineering. The Centre, which spans both the Dunedin and Christchurch campuses, was formed in late 2009 but officially launched last month. Bioengineering combines the design and problem-solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences to improve healthcare diagnosis, monitoring and therapy. The Otago Centre incorporates a number of interdisciplinary research initiatives including themes in pharmaceutical engineering, biomedical devices, biomaterials, biomedical imaging and tissue engineering. Dunedin Director Dr Olaf Bork says the Centre brings the University to the forefront of applied biomedical and scientific research. Christchurch Director Dr Anthony Butler says bioengineering is becoming increasingly mainstream and rapidly changing the medical landscape. “Hospitals are full of computers, machines and technical devices. The University of Otago is very much a part of developing technology for the future which will hopefully make things much better for patients and clinicians, and potentially save lives.” Being spread between the Dunedin and Christchurch campuses allows the new Centre to make the most of the University’s strengths in health sciences and sciences, and also takes advantage of Christchurch campus ’ proximity to Canterbury University’s Engineering School. The Centre is also providing postgraduate opportunities in bioengineering. ABOUT TH
