Environments using Physical-Virtual Artefacts

By Thomas Pederson

This paper proposes a unifying perspective on artefacts in physical and virtual knowledge work environments that can inspire the design of new artefacts that (1) support seamless knowledge work by bridging the physical-virtual environment gap (incoherence and information transfer costs between the two environments), and (2) to the highest possible degree utilize the inherent unique affordances and constraints of the different environments. The physical-virtual view is a simple and general tool for the analysis and design of artefacts for physical-virtual knowledge work environments
