Abstract

A technical management procedure that is directed to the design of a complex electronic system for space environment applications is described. The procedure was developed by the NASA Lewis Research Center and applied to the Centaur launch vehicle program. Specific controls used include a complete hierarchy of specifications, design ground rules, derating document, preferred parts list, worst-case design procedure, computer circuit analysis programs, and design reviews. The use of these rigorous design con-trols resulted in an electronic system capable of meeting its performance and reliability goals with a minimum of difficulty.
