Abstract

It is argued that the prevailing definition of quasicrystals, requiring them to containanaxisofsymmetrythatisforbiddeninperiodiccrystals,isinadequate. Thisdefinitionistoorestrictiveinthatitexcludesanimportantandinteresting collectionofstructuresthatexhibitallthewell-knownpropertiesofquasicrystals withoutpossessinganyforbiddensymmetries.
