Design for Environment and Design for Recycling of Plastic Packaging- Master Thesis Title: Critical Aspects in the Design of Plastics Packaging: A Design for Environment and Design for Recycling Perspective.



The thesis addresses the issue of critical aspects in the design of plastics packaging from a design for environment and design for recycling perspective. With the increasingly greater amounts of plastic packaging consumed in the EU and the inherent change in these, as a consequence of the evolution of societies and mankind, plastic packaging should start to encompass, more and more, environmental concerns with relation to its post-consumption stage. Drivers that condition packaging manufacture such as innovation in raw materials, innovation in processes and technologies, packed product innovation and design innovation are identified and characterized by a set of performance indicators that address packaging during its production, transport, use and disposal phases. Case studies are used to support the analysis. Transverse aspects such as regulation, consumer safety and marketing are also briefly addressed. The interdependence amongst the four drivers identified is analyzed and a conclusion is drawn relating innovation in raw materials, processes/technologies and products to the concepts of prevention/reduction, while innovation in design is linked with both prevention/reduction and the recyclability/recoverability of packaging. The thesis also establishes DfE and DfR as a paradigmatic approach for an environmental innovation policy in Portugal, with obvious influences in packaging design/manufacture as well as in the creation of an industrial development policy for Portugal
