On Protecting Functional Units with Temporal Redundancy

Abstract

This paper discusses performance, power and fault coverage problems of temporal redundancy and proposes Back-to-Back Redundant Execution (B2BRE), a technique that realizes temporal redundancy on a pipeline-stage level granularity. By forcing redundant computations to fire on consecutive cycles, B2BRE reduces power consumption and improves fault coverage of temporally redundant pipelined functional units without additional performance penalty. We show initial experimental results that demonstrate the potential of this approach. 1
