Gale is an organisational sociologist whose primary interest for the past 10 years has been the social impacts of a variety of information technologies in the workplace. Most recently, Gale was head of social science research for the Ontario Telepresence Project (OTP), a three year, $5 million dollar industry-university research consortium supported by the province of Ontario and Ontario firms. The focus of the research was on the use of video-mediated communication in the context of organisational use and work practices. The goal of OTP was to work with the users to design an environment that was flexible enough to uncover new ways of working together in a multi-media communication world. The development of a methodology for deployment of technology was considered an essential part of the innovation process. Gale has taught organisational sociology in the Sociology Department and lectured in the Faculty of Information Studies at the University of Toronto. She has done a variety of media work and is currently author of the Ideas column in the University of Toronto Magazine where she addresses issues of the Information Society. 2006: Gale is currently Director of the University of Toronto’
