The Evaluation of a CAST Tool for the Automatic Validation of Knowledge Based Software Systems

Abstract

This paper describes a Process Improvement Experiment (PIE) which involved the introduction of a Computer Aided Software Testing (CAST) tool for the testing and validation of software systems.AES Ltd are specialists in the development and implementation of condition / process monitoring software systems using Artificial Intelligence techniques (i.e. Knowledge Based/Expert Systems, Pattern Recognition and Neural Nets) for both civil and military sectors. Such software systems tend to be large scale systems being used as “mission critical ” Expert Decision Support Systems (EDSS) and the introduction of a CAST tool aims to reduce significantly the testing and validation time leading to a major reduction of the total software development costs.The experiment took place in parallel with a contract/project to design and customise an EDSS for Schulzer engines which are interchangeable with Paxman Valenta diesel power units used by most train operators in the UK. The baseline / reference project was completed before the PIE begun. It was a project, which involved the installation of an EDSS for Paxman Valenta diesel engines. The goals of the PIE project, the methodology adopted for the introduction of a CAST tool as well as the work done are presented in the paper. Also, the results achieved and their significance to the overall business are discussed. 1
