Abstract

This paper examines a range of what the media has described as outrageous, dangerous or otherwise troubling content in videogames. The author suggests that the types of behavior enabled and encouraged by these games actually reinforces existing cultural norms. Most cultures establish norms, and also provide occasional opportunities for transgression of these norms. Breaking the rules, and understanding that rules are being broken is necessary to test the limits and the boundaries of acceptable behavior. Games provide us with an arena in which such trangressions can take place safely. Current videogames, however, provide these transgressive opportunities primarily for white males. The author suggests it would be interesting to see what happens if these opportunities were broadened
