Books can be deceiving: Edith Turner and the problem of categories in anthropology

By Matthew Engelke

Abstract

This article situates Edith Turner's first book, The Spirit and the Drum, in relation to feminist and postmodern work within anthropology. Drawing on each tradition, the author shows how Turner's work fits easily into neither, suggesting, rather, that such categorizations fail to capture the richness and depth of the work
