Physical activity and quality of life in the elderly. A narrative review

<p><strong>Introduction:</strong> Quality of life study in the elderly is of great importance in order to improve health levels of this segment of the population. One of the factors invoked as determinant is the practice of physical activities.</p><p><strong>Objective:</strong> The objective of this paper is to identify physical exercise as quality of life factor in elderly.</p><p><strong>Material and methods:</strong> Google Scholar and Dialnet data bases were consulted. Publications of the last 5 years were analyzed. The descriptors employed were: quality of life in the elderly, physical exercise in the elderly, physical activity in the elderly. Articles related chronic diseases, dementia, malnutrition, or caregivers were excluded. So, there were 8 articles analyzed.</p><p><strong>Development:</strong> The review articles agree to consider physical activity as an important determinant of quality of life in the elderly, due to its physical and psychological repercussions (better physical health indexes, high self-esteem, vitality, positive social interaction). The revised articles have identified the linkage between physical activity and categories such as functional capacity, cognitive capacity, productive activities, functional autonomy, functional independence, self-esteem, physical health, mental health, optimism, social participation, social inclusion, vitality, active ageing, healthy ageing, mental concentration.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong>  Physical activity has a preponderant role as determinant of the quality of life in older adults.</p><p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Mental health, wellbeing, elderly, exercise.</p
