Visual Anthropology of Urban Space: Murals as Agents of Cultural Memory

Abstract

This study is based on the analysis of urban and visual culture of the cities Rijeka and Pula with reference to murals which are made with a view to awake and to connect the citizens with its important historical, cultural and other aspects of the city itself. Also, the urban space, in this case the city of Rijeka and Pula, is of great importance as a productive field in developing such visual interventions and new ways of communication. I analyze this theme as a researcher – observer. The research starts from setting the historical framework and analysis of the definitions of murals. It continues towards the discussion about public space and connection between three main categories such as history, memory and identity. The next important chapter talks about cultural memory and after its theoretical overview it continues into the comparison of the main points in Rijeka´s and Pula´s history and their cultural memory.
