"Restless legs syndrome in patients on dialysis"

By Marko Miličević

Abstract

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological movement disorder characterized by motion discomfort in the legs with paresthesia and/ or disesthesia, with disturbances being more pronounced in sleep and in the evening. There are two types of this syndrome; primary (idiopathic) and secondary which may be caused by iron deficiency, by taking certain medicines, preganancy, uremia, polyneuropathy, anemia due to lack of vitamin B12 or folic acid. Two time more often syndrome occurs in a women than in men. The prevalence of syndrome in the population is estimated at 2-15%. The syndrome is mentioned for the first time in the 17th century. It is often unrecognizable and neglected by the physician for unidentified symptoms and symptoms that are considered benign. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of RLS in the dialysis group in terms of age, sex and duration of dialysis. The study is conducted on 30 subjects that are patients on dialysis. In the research, the RLS weight was estimated by two RLS severity scales; (JHRLSS) and (IRLSSGRS). The results of this prospective study will be dealt with by the method of descriptive statistics
