Compulsive Internet Use as a Predictor of Anxiety and Depression among Adolescents

By Tena Erceg

Abstract

The Compulsive Internet Use Scale; Meerkerk, van den Eijnden, Vermulst i Garretsen, 2009). Ključne riječi:The aim of this research was to examine the distribution of different aspects of compulsive Internet use and its relations to anxiety and depression simptoms in Croatian adolescents. The study was conducted upon 1,491 primary and secondary schools students from all across Croatia, that is 807 girls and 668 boys between the age 11 to 18. Compulsive Internet use was measured by The Compulsive Internet Use Scale (Meerkerk, van den Eijnden, Vermulst and Garretsen, 2009). Anxiety and depression in adolescents were measured by Beck's inventories of anxiety and depression in children and adolescents (Beck, Beck, Jolly and Steer, 2011). The results indicate that Croatian adolescents mainly manifest criteria of compulsive Interent use regarding conflicts (interpersonal and intrapersonal), followed by criteria related to loss of control, use of the Internet as a way to regulate moods, withdrawal criteria and mental preoccupation with the Internet. Regression analysis shows that compulsive use of the Internet, alongside with gender, age and school grades variables significantly contributes to the explanation of anxiety and depression symptoms in adolescents, which was expected and in line with previous research. Higher level of anxiety and depression symptoms will be expressed by younger adolescents, girls, students with lower grades and those you use Internet in compulsive way more often. Compulsive Internet use is the strongest predictor in both models. This study gives a more specific overview of the relationship between compulsive Internet use, anxiety and depression thereby contributing to the development of preventive and intervention measures for this growing problem. Future studies are needed, especially those that will examine direction of relationship between compulsive nature of Internet use and emotional difficulties. Ke
