English and American: Historical and Etymological Lexicography.

By Julie M. Coleman

Abstract

Metadata only entryThis section provides an overview of the main developments in the historical and etymological lexicography of English since 1990, although there is little to say about etymological dictionaries during this period. Most of the historical dictionaries discussed here are ongoing projects, and almost all have been affected by the development of the internet and of online searching. Dictionaries that have become available online in this period include the OED, MED, and DOE, and electronic searching facilitates entirely new types of dictionary research. Dictionary projects that are not online also use the internet to engage their target audience and encourage purchase of the dictionary in its printed format. The internet also allows informal and untrained lexicography to reach a wide audience
