Goat numbers declined from an early medieval peak, though this was not a simple and continuous process. They tended to persist in the uplands and woodlands, mainly in the west. Their significance for the aristocracy and peasantry is assessed, and it is argued that goats provide insights into the medieval economy and the concept of ‘alternative agriculture’
