Entrainment reduction in a static-mixer settler setup by applying electric field enhanced coalescence


The use of an electric field to intensify the separation of emulsified water in oil is a mature technology in oil and gas industry. The application of an electric field to enhance separation and reduce entrainment in two industrial extraction systems containing organic and aqueous phases, in a lab scale static-mixer settler setup, was studied. The mixing of the organic and aqueous phases was carried out by using a static-mixer. Significant coalescence of the dispersed phase was observed, which resulted in a 5-8 times reduction in entrainment, depending on the extraction system used. An increase of the field strength led to even more coalescence, which led to bigger droplet sizes than at lower field strength. The use of AC field enabled to get the same performance, but at lower field strength. Thus, the use of electric field in the systems was promising.
