Between 1788 and 1852 over twenty-four thousand women were transported to Australia. They made up about one-sixth of Australia's convict population. New South Wales received most of the early convicts and, when transportation to that colony ended in 1840, the flow of offenders was diverted to Van Diemen's Land..
