Author presents conditions, possibilities and limitations connected with running simulated dialogue between user and information retrieval system through interface. There has been justified the selection of the conversational model as the most adequate for reflecting the information retrieval process. There has been characterised information retrieval process as multilevel arrangement of interactions ongoing between the subjects of the process: user, intermediary and system's assets. There have been discussed ways of understanding of the dialogue between the human being and machine. Author also describes the structure of the dialogue in the information retrieval process, separating its elementary units and succession and regularity of their occurrence. There have been presented research prospects connected with attempts of creating models for understanding the dialogue during information retrieval situation
